    Thanks for the content. Really enjoying your videos. As I’m new to whittling, is your timber anything special? Is it prepared in any way? Context: I’ve just been out at parks with my kids and using fallen branches etc and just using my leatherman.

      I use basswood that is specifically for carving. You can, of course use found wood, but the predictability of using precut sizes and wood that is intended for carving is much easier. I do have a video on wood as well if your interested.

    Thanks so much for putting together such detailed beginner videos. Any insight into what to look for in a handle? I am interested in the Deep Holler knife but the only handle they have in stock is called an A handle and it looks like it has a pretty big curve on it and a point on the end. Any thoughts on picking that up versus waiting for something else to come in stock?

    • @dywoodcarving
      @dywoodcarving 23 дня назад

      Thanks. It's a hard question because so much about handles is personal preference. I don't have the A handle, but I do have one of the "curvy" handles which is somewhat similar. I find it to be generally comfortable and have no problem using it for extended periods of time. I wouldn't worry about the point on the end as the DHK handles tend to be fairly large and your hand is not likey to slide off over the pointed area.

    Thank you for sharing this! I'm a 35 year old knitter-crocheter with co-ordination issues, and wanted to try my hand at some new crafts, something completely different! I've been curious about whittling for ages and really wanted to give it a try after watching a guy whittle some mushrooms a while ago on youtube, but I'm dyspraxic and was nervous I'd struggle with a knife. Then today I stumbled across this video and it explains it so well and shows your working nice and clearly. These little dudes are really cute, what a beautiful little craft!

      I'm not sure. It was the handle they used to sell at Treeline USA, but they are only selling direct through their website now. The one that looks closest to it there is called a "Mini T", but it's a little different.

    Came across this as I bought a cheap whittling set from Amazon. I kindof enjoyed the hobby, but the knives were kinda dull, then dulled further even quicker so lopping of bigger chunks was nigh impossible - I could only reasonably get shavings. The gloves that came with it, were like the 1st set in the video - I think he understates how annoying the slipperyness is, especially when learning, plus the small shavings were getting caught on the fibres of the glove. By my second 'spoon' it had gotten out of hand (pun unintended), and is really tricky to clean off. So yeah - I should've spent a bit extra on knives with a better reputation, and bought gloves separately.

    Yeah, I noticed that andrewgward7. I suppose if you want one, you order it, pay for it, then in 10 short years it comes in. Your wife comes in and says "We need to talk"...."I told you we don't need another junker car for you leave out in the yard till it rots to the ground". Then you explain that you bought this little carving knife...."oh its great honey, see look at the pretty handle and thin blade" Yeah, I am sure she will see why you spent that kind of money on a knife that you toss in your drawer and intend on doing some fine carving of......someday......someday...."Hell, I don't know when......its raining for Pete's sakes and she throws a hissy fit if I get wood shavings all over the floor and on the kitchen table." Well one good thing came from all this....our divorce is final and all I am left with is all those junker cars and this purdy carving knife....
